Poker is a card game that may have several rounds of betting and involves a number of cards dealt to each player. A high hand wins the pot. The game has many variants, each with its own rules and strategy. It is most popular in the United States, where it is played in homes, in clubs, and in casinos. The game has even become a part of American culture, with its own vocabulary and jargon.<\/p>\n
The game is usually played with a standard pack of 52 cards, although some games use more or less than that number. There are four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs) and the rank of a card is determined by its numerical frequency; i.e., the higher the card is ranked, the rarer it is. Exceptions to this rule are the ace, which is always high, and certain cards that count as wild (usually deuces and one-eyed jacks).<\/p>\n
Before the deal begins, the players are required to make forced bets, called antes or blinds. The dealer shuffles the deck and the player clockwise from him cuts it. Then the cards are dealt, face up or down, depending on the variant being played.<\/p>\n
