Poker is a card game played between two or more players with chips. The goal of the game is to have the best five-card hand. The game can be played with a fixed number of cards or a random deal. Typically, the winner collects a pot of money that is built up from each player\u2019s bets.<\/p>\n
Before the cards are dealt, players place an amount of money into a pot, called an \u201cante\u201d or a \u201cblind.\u201d Then, each player puts in their own chips (called \u201craising\u201d). A player may choose to call, raise, or fold. If a player calls, they must put in as many chips as the total stakes of the last player who raised. If a player cannot match the last raiser\u2019s total, they must drop out of the game.<\/p>\n
Professional poker players are experts at extracting signal from noise across a variety of channels to both exploit and protect themselves against opponents. They build behavioral dossiers on their opponents and even buy records of other players\u2019 \u201chand histories.\u201d<\/p>\n
After the ante and blind bets are placed, the dealer deals each player 5 cards face down. A round of betting occurs for each card until there is a final betting phase, known as the river. At this point, the last card is turned up and the player with the highest hand wins the pot with all bets made at each round.
