What is a Slot?

A narrow depression, groove, notch, or opening, especially one for receiving something, as a keyway in a machine or a slit for coins in a vending machine. Also: a position in a group, series, or sequence. I booked my haircut at the 2 p.m. slot.

A machine that takes paper tickets with barcodes or other symbols as currency, and pays out credits based on the combination of these symbols. The symbols vary from game to game, but some common ones include fruit, bells, and stylized lucky sevens. A slot machine may also have a progressive jackpot, where the value of the prize increases each time the slot is played.

An elongated hole in a piece of wood or metal, often used to hold a screw. Also: a position or period of time, as in The program received a new time slot on the broadcasting schedule.
