The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where the goal is to make the best five-card hand possible by betting and raising in a round. It is played with a standard pack of 52 cards (although some variant games use more). There are several ways to win, with the highest being the five of a kind, or straight. Other winning hands include three of a kind, two pair, and one pair. A player may also push his cards to the dealer facedown without putting chips into the pot (fold).

When it is a player’s turn to act, he can put out chips equal to the amount of the previous bet in order to call it, or he can raise it by more than that amount to raise the current bet. In a fixed limit game the raise must be no more than twice the amount of the previous bet, and in a pot limit game a limit is usually placed on how many chips a player may place in each betting interval.

A player may also choose to fold his cards and leave the game, but if he calls a bet he must remain in the game until a showdown. In the showdown all players’ hands are revealed and the player with the best hand wins the stakes.

Earlier vying games include a variety of three-card and four-card games, such as belle, flux, and trente-un (French, 17th – 18th centuries), primero (French, 16th century), mus, and ambigu (French, of unknown date). These games have no significant bearing on the modern game of Poker.
