Another skill that many professional poker players possess is hiding their tells, unconscious physical cues about the value of their hand. These can include facial expressions, body tics, and nervous habits like biting nails. They are also adept at creating false tells to deceive other players. All of this allows them to keep their cards secret from other players, while earning bets and winning the pot. If a player does not wish to place a bet, they can check instead, passing their turn until it comes to them again. Alternatively, they can choose to fold. If they do, they forfeit any chance to win the pot.
